Gallery C
Exhibition: Bert Beirne - Classical Still Life Paintings

Dates: October 12 - November 10, 2007

Gallery Hours: M-F 10-6, Wed. 10-8, Sat. 10-5
Website: http://www.galleryc.net

A 21ST CENTURY SLICE OF THE 17TH CENTURY MASTERS

Imagine the reincarnation of those elegant fruits and vegetables painted by famous masters four hundred years ago. Bert Beirne, whose one-woman exhibit opens at Gallery C in Raleigh on October 12, has accomplished this rare feat. Her vivid, perfectly formed subjects, whether produce, embroidered linens, or antique china, suggest to the viewer that they were lifted right out of a work at the Louvre.

The exacting clarity of the things included in Beirne’s work is reminiscent of those Flemish rooms and tabletops by artists such as Kalf and Heda that have captured art lovers awe for all these years.  It is both a pleasure and a surprise to find a contemporary artist using similar deep paint colors, depth of perspective and unseen natural light sources. The artwork demonstrates a fresh interpretation of the classical traditions in still life painting.

Finishes that appear both translucent and lacquered, forms delicate yet strong, colors that appear natural and antiqued simultaneously characterize Bert Beirne’s canvases. Many are small examples of a single subject, others are composed of items that might appear in a family scrapbook, all captured in Beirne’s rare moods mixed with a hint of mystery.

Her personal history began as a Cincinnati, Ohio native, receiving her BFA at the University of Cincinnati. The artist now lives in Georgia and has won numerous regional and national awards for these time consuming works. Beirne’s paintings are included in private and corporate collections in England, Germany and Japan, as well as throughout the United States and Canada.

  • Mouton Rothschild, Apples and Cherries by Bert Beirne, oil on linen, 20 x 16 inches
  • Persian Vase, Green Grapes, Plums and Oriental by Bert Beirne, oil on linen, 20 x 24 inches

ANIMALS CAVORT ON ARTIST'S HIGHWAYS

Robin Hanes is an artist and naturalist with a cause; the roadside wildlife you have seen so many times while driving the highways and back roads throughout North Carolina or any other state in the nation. Like the artist, you have no doubt noticed many a deer or skunk or raccoon peering out of the
brush or crossing the road or worse yet, having been hit by a car. Robin’s paintings, albeit in brilliant gouache colors and with highly decorative internal frames, remind us of the dangers that these creatures face and how they depend on us for their protection.

The goal of these paintings is to make us all keenly aware of our environment and the animals that share it. As a result, Robin Hane’s exhibit “Road Life”, which opens at Gallery C in Raleigh on September 28th, contains many references to the plight of wild animals in today’s spiraling urbanization. A percentage of the sales during the exhibit will be donated to the North Carolina Zoo where many injured and orphaned animals from around the state are cared for.

Among the menagerie in the collection are small paintings of a deer, a frog, a squirrel and a rabbit whose demise is colorfully comforted by rims of flowers and fruit. Her larger paintings tell whole stories through handsome modernistic cars, fall landscapes or a moonlit country scene. She disguises the underlying message of many of these works with playful borders full of stop signs, headlights, tires, birds and bugs.

Hanes' enthusiasm for the North Carolina Zoo was nourished when her son interned in the Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at the Zoo. She learned that caring individuals like herself began bringing the Zoo animals that had been hurt or orphaned and needed treatment in order to release them back into the wild. The resulting Rehab Center, which is privately funded, was founded in 2001 and cares for these animals with a largely volunteer staff.

The Robin Hanes exhibit opens Friday, September 28 and closes October 30. Gallery C is open every day from 10am to 6pm, Wednesday evenings until 8pm, Saturdays until 5pm and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. Gallery C is located at 3532 Wade Avenue in the Ridgewood Shopping Center.

Flanders Art Gallery
Katherine Brown - Artist Exhibit with Portrait Sketches & Workshop

Flanders Art Gallery will present Katherine Brown: Paintings for a Lifetime with an artist reception on Friday, October 5th from 6:30-9:30pm and will run until October 31st.

Brown's exhibit will feature cityscapes, portraits, and scenes from her farm in New York State. During the weekend, Brown will offer Portrait Sketches on Saturday and will instruct a three hour Portrait
Workshop on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, October 6th, Brown will offer Portrait Sketches in charcoal and Conte crayon at Flanders Art Gallery. These portraits will be completed during live sittings and are sketches that would normally be part of the process of a finished oil portrait; these are her first impressions.

On Sunday afternoon, October 7th, Brown will instruct the Portrait Workshop in Charcoal, Pencil or Conte Crayon for 3-hours at Flanders. A preliminary portraiture sketch will be developed that will help both the beginning and advanced student in capturing their first impression of a live model. Katherine will explore "what to look for" with students realizing that in portraiture it is the interpretation of the artist that counts. During the workshop, she will help students to "see" their subject and interpret him/her in charcoal, pencil or Conte crayon. Students will explore the use of monochromatic mediums to express facial features and mood.

Katherine Brown, now residing in Pittsburg, PA, began studying art under Austrian Paul Penczner, then the leading portrait painter in Memphis, Tennessee. She had her first one woman show in Westchester County, NY, at 21 years old. She was awarded a full Merit Scholarship at the National Academy School of Fine Art in NYC, and studied for the two years under internationally acclaimed master artist Daniel Greene, N.A.

Katherine continued painting portraits and exhibiting in New York and Boston before relocating to Atlanta, Georgia. Eventually she included floral, still life, and figurative work in her repertoire, and began exhibiting these works at galleries in Washington, D.C., Boston, Boca Raton, Atlanta, and Dayton. Her works are in collections worldwide, and she has been published in numerous publications, including Southern Living Magazine.

Flanders Art Gallery is located at 18 Seaboard in the Shoppes at Seaboard Station in downtown Raleigh. For more information, contact Kelly Flanders McChesney at 919-834-5044 or flandersart@mac.com,

“PHOTOGRAPHERS – A GROUP SHOW” AT FLANDERS ART GALLERY

Flanders Art Gallery will present an exhibit of four North Carolina photographers in “Photographers – A Group Show.”

The exhibit opens with a meet the artists’ reception on First Friday, August 3rd, 6:00-8:30pm and will run August 3-21st.

Brian Shawcroft, AIA, was born in Nottingham, England. His vast background includes serving as design critic for the Boston Architectural Center while completing a degree of Master in Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in 1960. He studied photography at the Central School of Arts & Crafts in London before starting work as a free-lance photographer. In Raleigh, he joined as partner with MacMillan & MacMillan & Thames before establishing the office of Shawcroft-Taylor in 1971. This office was responsible for a large number of buildings in institutional, airport, commercial, and educational categories. In 1981, two of Shawcroft’s drawings were included in the exhibition, “Architect as Artist” at the AIA national headquarters in Washington, DC. In 1991, Shawcroft was awarded the Kamphoefner Prize in Architecture for his integrity and devotion to the Modern Movement in Architecture. He was a former visiting associate professor of architecture at NC State, where he taught courses in architectural design and photography. To this day his photographs have been published in numerous books and journals in Canada and the U.S.

Colette Shepard’s love for travel is depicted in her photography that has literally taken her around the world. Originally from Liverpool, England, Shepard has lived in Sydney, Australia, Santa Monica, CA, and now Raleigh. After studying in the Santa Monica College Photography Department, she went onto becoming the Custom Photo Technician in the Office of Instructional Development at UCLA.

James C. Williams is currently working with infrared photography. Having grown up in Lexington, NC, Williams now lives Winston-Salem with his wife Amy Funderburk who is also an artist and his inspiration. Williams attributes his talents to studying under photographers Simon Marsden, Joe Paduano, and Hugh Milsom. He has developed this infrared craft where each photograph is hand developed and printed by the artist. Williams' photography has been exhibited in various locals throughout North Carolina and Ireland.

Stacey Phipps’ “CARGO” is a black and white study of the industrial setting of Morehead City’s port. Phipps began with architectural studies in Chicago and New York, and eventually branched out to other studies of line and form. She has a “purist attitude” and she tries “to capture it as it is – pure and unadulterated.”

Flanders Art Gallery is located at 18 Seaboard in the new brick buildings at Seaboard Station, just off Peace Street near Peace College. For more information, contact Kelly Flanders McChesney at 919-834-5044 or flandersart@mac.com, www.flandersartgallery.com.

Exhibition: Roots, Rhythms & Myths: The Art of Haiti

Gallery C

Exhibition: Roots, Rhythms & Myths: The Art of Haiti
Paintings by three generations of Haitian Artists and a rare selection of authentic Vodou Flags.

Dates: June 22 - July 31, 2007
Reception: Friday, June 22nd 7-9pm

Special Guest: Lionel Delatour, Haitian diplomat and founding member of the Haiti Democracy Project

Gallery Hours: M-F 10-6, Wed. 10-8, Sat. 10-5
Website: http://www.galleryc.net

Art is flourishing in Haiti. Despite recent years of social and political upheaval on this troubled Caribbean island, artists continue to paint and sculpt as if, by their combined efforts, they can create a safer and more stable homeland for their people. Styles vary and subjects speak to a rich artistic heritage nourished since the 1950s by the rest of the world. Todays young artists join the ranks of the two generations that preceded them, taking the lessons they have been taught and giving us newer and bolder art that cries out "We are still here!"

A special exhibition at Gallery C will feature over 50 works from three generations of Haitian painters. The paintings reveal a passionate love for simple island life. Numerous artists, young and old, have created moving images of markets and villages, fishermen and farmers, with the overall colors and rhythms of the country. Alongside these "realists" are fantasy artists who's surreal and symbolic works reflect deeply held spiritual beliefs and an underlying desire for escape from the rough island realities.

Accompanying the paintings on display is a unique selection of authentic vodou flags. Vodou (voodoo) is the commonly practiced religion in Haiti combining West African and Catholic beliefs. In the 1920's most American ball gowns were being made in textile mills on the island. Workers would stuff their pockets with sequins at the end of each day and sew them on to elaborate flags for vodou celebrations and rituals. The sequined flags are still used today incorporating symbols related to the many vodou spirits. These same symbols can also be found in many Haitian paintings demonstrating just how strongly connected art is to religion and culture on the island.

This exhibition will be on view until July 31st.

On the right, top to bottom:

  • Erzuli (The Goddess of Love), sequined Vodou flag, 32 x 32 inches
  • Marine III by Jose Hilome oil on canvas,16 x 20 inches
  • Arbre Anime I by Kens Cassagnol, 8 x 30 inches
